Service Opportunities at Camp Liahona

A Legacy of Service

Most of the labor that has made Camp Liahona a delightful place has been volunteer service work. That tradition not only continues but is expanding. There is much that is waiting to be done to make it even more functional, beautiful, safe and fun.

Many who camp here ask for a service project that they can do. It is a satisfying way to say "thank you" to the Creator and to all his creative children who have given their skill and energy to one another at Camp Liahona. It is also a great way for youth to earn service hours and to satisfy service requirements such as in the Aaronic Priesthood Achievement Programme and the Young Women's Personal Progress.

Clear Brush and Gather Firewood

Camp Liahona is a 22 acre wood. The natural understory is elderberry bushes and the natural groundcover is stinging nettle. As we clear out the elderberry, we can mow the nettle which allows the natural grass to survive and the grounds become a bit more usable and fun.( We certainly do not intend to clear a majority of the grounds because we want to preserve the natural wood in most areas.) Any useable firewood created or discovered during the clearing operation needs to be moved to the group fire ring wood bins.

Create Picnic Spots

Camp Liahona needs a few spots where a small group can light a fire, roast some marshmallows, and enjoy a picnic. These areas have been identified on the Camp Master Plan. The fire ring must be carefully designed and built under close supervision of the Camp Directors because Camp Liahona is in the fens and the soil can take light and burn.

Create Small Group Camps

Some of the Picnic Spots mentioned above need to be expanded into overnight tenting areas. These need a picnic table, a fire ring and some level areas for tents. The fire ring must be carefully designed and built under close supervision of the Camp Directors because Camp Liahona is in the fens and the soil can take light and burn.

Camp Beautification

For those who would like to help landscape and beautify the Camp, here is a list of deer resistant bulbs and perennials to choose from. The areas we would like planted are the Sacred Grove of oaks beyond the second fire ring, and the berm south of the bath houses. If you have natural, native shrub cuttings, they would be wonderful too. Please check with the Camp Directors before adding any new species to the area. The Camp can provide tools.

Bulbs: Autumn crocus, Bluebell, Daffodil, Ornamental onion, Siberian squill, Snowdrops, Winter aconite

Perennials: Asparagus fern, Basket of gold, Black eyed Susan, Bleeding heart, Blue larkspur, Dusty miller, Forget me not,
Foxglove, Garden and Russian sage, Iris, Peony, Poppies, Queen Annes lace, Statice, Threadleaf coreopsis, Yarrow, Zinnia
